چکیده

We consider the statistical analysis of random sections of a spin fibre bundle over the sphere. These may be thought of as random fields that at each point p ∈ S2 take as a value a curve (e.g. an ellipse) living in the tangent plane at that point TpS 2, rather than a number as in ordinary situations. The analysis of such fields is strongly motivated by applications, for instance polarization experiments in Cosmology. To investigate such fields, spin needlets were recently introduced by [21] and [20]. We consider the use of spin needlets for spin angular power spectrum estimation, in the presence of noise and missing observations, and we provide Central Limit Theorem results, in the high frequency sense; we discuss also tests for bias and asymmetries with an asymptotic justification. •

Spectral estimation on the sphere with needlets: high frequency asymptotics

Abstract: The angular power spectrum of a stationary random field on the sphere is estimated from the needlet coefficients of a single realization, observed with increasingly fine resolution. The estimator we consider is similar to the one recently used in practice by (Faÿ et al. 2008) to estimate the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The consistency of the estimator, in the as...

Localisation of directional scale-discretised wavelets on the sphere

Scale-discretised wavelets yield a directional wavelet framework on the sphere where a signal can be probed not only in scale and position but also in orientation. Furthermore, a signal can be synthesised from its wavelet coefficients exactly, in theory and practice (to machine precision). Scale-discretised wavelets are closely related to spherical needlets (both were developed independently at...

Spherical Needlets for CMB Data Analysis

We discuss Spherical Needlets and their properties. Needlets are a form of spherical wavelets which do not rely on any kind of tangent plane approximation and enjoy good localization properties in both pixel and harmonic space; moreover needlets coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated at any fixed angular distance, which makes their use in statistical procedures very promising. In view of ...

Asymptotic Uncorrelation for Mexican Needlets

Abstract We recall Mexican needlets from [5]. We derive an estimate for certain types of Legendre series, which we apply to the statistical properties of Mexican needlets. More precisely, we shall show that, under isotropy and Gaussianity assumptions, the Mexican needlet coefficients of a random field on the sphere are asymptotically uncorrelated, as the frequency parameter goes to infinity. Th...

Needlet algorithms for estimation in inverse problems

Abstract: We provide a new algorithm for the treatment of inverse problems which combines the traditional SVD inversion with an appropriate thresholding technique in a well chosen new basis. Our goal is to devise an inversion procedure which has the advantages of localization and multiscale analysis of wavelet representations without losing the stability and computability of the SVD decompositi...
